As erosion continues, these fins turn into arches. Small cavities begin to form and grow larger with each storm and eventually become a fin. They then erode, revealing fractures in the rock, rain water seeps between the cracks, and in the winter that water freezes and expands, breaking off pieces of sandstone. The simplest way we can explain it is that basically over time, the layers of sandstone are forced upward and crack in mostly parallel lines, like on baked bread.
